Prestopped bilabial trills in Sangtam

چکیده

This paper discusses the phonetic and phonological features of a typologically rare prestopped bilabial trill and some associated evolving sound changes in the phonology of Sangtam, a Tibeto-Burman language of central Nagaland, north-east India. Prestopped bilabial trills were encountered in two dozen words of a 500-item corpus and found to be in phonemic contrast with all other members of the plosive series. Evidence from static palatograms and linguagrams demonstrates that Sangtam speakers articulate this sound by first making an apicalor laminal-dental oral occlusion, which is then explosively released into a bilabial trill involving up to three oscillations of the lips. The paper concludes with a discussion of the possible historical sources of prestopped bilabial trills in this language, taking into account phonological reconstructions and cross-linguistic comparisons.

On Medumba bilabial trills and vowels

The Medumba consonant inventory includes plain and prenasalized bilabial trills /ʙ, mʙ/, which contrast with bilabial stops. The trills occur most often before the central vowels /ʉ̜ ə/, while they are not attested before /u/. The central vowel /ʉ̜/ has a vowel posture that is particularly conducive to trilling of the lips: it does not form a circular opening, the corners of the mouth are drawn s...

Sounds of the Human Vocal Tract

Previous research suggests that beatboxers only use sounds that exist in the world’s languages. This paper provides evidence to the contrary, showing that beatboxers use non-linguistic articulations and airstream mechanisms to produce many sound effects that have not been attested in any language. An analysis of real-time magnetic resonance videos of beatboxing reveals that beatboxers produce n...

Phonetically prestopped laterals in Australian languages: a preliminary investigation of Warlpiri

Phonologically prestopped nasals occur primarily in central and southern Australian languages. Phonetically prestopped nasals on the other hand, occur in a large number of Australian languages and are not isolated to one particular region. Phonetically prestopped nasals have been analysed as a preservation of spectral characteristics at vowel-sonorant boundaries in languages which have a compar...

Voice training and therapy with a semi-occluded vocal tract: rationale and scientific underpinnings.

PURPOSE Voice therapy with a semi-occluded vocal tract has a long history. The use of lip trills, tongue trills, bilabial fricatives, humming, and phonation into tubes or straws has been hailed by clinicians, singing teachers, and voice coaches as efficacious for training and rehabilitation. Little has been done, however, to provide the scientific underpinnings. The purpose of the study was to ...

Aerodynamic characteristics of trills and phonological patterning

The present study attempts to characterize the aerodynamic conditions required for the production of apical trills and to account for some universal tendencies in the patterning of trills in terms of their aerodynamic and distinctiveness requirements. In order to ascertain the aerodynamic conditions required for trills, oropharyngeal pressure (Po) and airflow were recorded simultaneously in two...
